Cape Kaliakra (photo gallery)

Located in the northern Bulgarian Black Sea Coast (60 km northeast of Varna), in Bulgaria, Cape Kaliakra is a nature reserve that has lots of surprises for tourists.

Facts about Kaliakra:

  • home to several rare birds (e.g. Pied Wheatear and a local race of European Shag) and a variety of birds can be seen to due their migration route;
  • in 1791 (11 August), the Battle of Cape Kalikra, the last naval battle of the Russo-Turkish War (1787-1792);
  • remnants of fortified walls, water-main, baths and residence of Despot Dobrotitsa in the short-lived Principality of Karvuna’s medieval capital (XIV century).
