Brussels, 4 July 2012 // Cluj-Napoca (Romania), Ivanovo (Russia), Varna (Bulgaria) and Vilnius (Lithuania) have been selected among 12 applications from cities all over Europe. These cities will now compete for the title of European Youth Capital 2015.

The applications of the four short-listed cities all presented ambitious programmes. They distinguished themselves for the long-term vision and the careful planning of preparation, monitoring and evaluation of their programmes. The cities focused on the development of policies improving the situation of youth employment, social inclusion and youth participation.

The teams of Cluj-Napoca, Ivanovo, Varna and Vilnius will have now until October to provide more details about their programme, planned activities, events and policy development. This will lead to the final selection of the European Youth Capital 2015, to be announced in November during an official award ceremony at the European Youth Forum General Assembly in Maribor, Slovenia (EYC 2013).

The jury, which includes representatives from the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities in Europe, the Committee on Culture and Education of the European Parliament, the Committee of the Regions, the Council of European Municipalities and Regions, the Advisory Council on Youth of the Council of Europe, EurActiv, the University of Montpellier, the Greek Youth Council (upcoming EYC 2014), the municipality of Thessaloniki, Greece (upcoming EYC 2014) and the European Youth Forum, will convene again later this year in Brussels and discuss the top short-listed applications in order to select the European Youth Capital 2015.

The European Youth Capital is an initiative facilitated by the European Youth Forum and will arrive at its seventh edition. Since the first European Youth Capital was awarded to Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in 2009, it has been gaining growing attention and outreach. In past years, the European Youth Forum has awarded the title EYC 2010 to Turin (Italy), EYC 2011 to Antwerp (Belgium), EYC 2012 to Braga (Portugal), EYC 2013 to Maribor (Slovenia) and EYC 2014 to Thessaloniki (Greece).
